Recently, I was one of the models for a Valentine’s Day photoshoot for Elegant Silk. Elegant silk is your one stop shop for all things beauty; hair styling, make-up applications, manicures, and you’re also able to purchase hair extensions, wigs, and lingerie. It is such a lovely boutique & I was more than honored to be one of their models for their Valentine’s Day photoshoot!
Alma Mei is an online clothing and accessories boutique created to make women feel fabulous on the inside and out! Alma Mei’s online boutique will carry pieces inspired by the runways in Paris and Milan as well as the ever evolving fashion scenes in Miami, New York, and L.A. Their “indie corner” will also highlight up-and-coming independent designers and brands that will add a unique touch to the site. Alma means “soul” in Spanish while Mei means “beauty” in Chinese. The name says it all, the Alma Mei girl is a “soulful beauty!” Founded by friends and entrepreneurs Liz De La Cruz-Jean and Gaby Ortega, Alma Mei’s mission is to combine Fashion and Philanthropy, topics that Liz and Gaby bonded over while attending Florida International University together. Alma Mei will donate a percentage of sales each quarter to a different charity while using their platform to spread awareness. They have already been involved with the Art of Surviving Banquet, League of Extraordinary Latinas Dinner, and Women Who Lead Conference. They hope to build lasting relationships within the fashion, media, and entertainment industries both locally and nationally.
“We hope to become a house hold name. Our goal is for our company to become synonymous with trendsetting fashion as well as philanthropy and giving back. We look to companies who were trailblazers and able change the way women shop, as inspiration. We however, have taken on the feat to attempt to change the REASON women shop and the WAY THEY GIVE,” says De La Cruz-Jean and Ortega
About the Founders
Gabriela Ortega and Liz De La Cruz-Jean met while attending Florida International University and bonded over their love of fashion and philanthropy. The two have remained friends while working in their fields but decided to collaborate to build a business around their shared passion.
Gabriela Ortega was born in Nicaragua and now resides in Miami, Florida. She earned an MBA from Nova Southeastern University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication and Journalism from Florida International University. She is currently a talent coordinator for MTV Latin America and MTV Tr3s and has shown her passion for philanthropy by participating in multiple charitable events. She recently ran two half marathons raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma foundation.
Liz De La Cruz-Jean was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to Miami at the age of 6 where she has lived for the majority of her life. Liz graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Florida International University. Liz then went on to work as a paralegal with the intention of attending law school one day. 5 years into her career, Liz decided to become stay-at-home mom while helping her husband with his business. Eventually Liz discovered her true passion was not the legal world, but to help others and to give back while working in a field that she loved: Fashion.
